Apprentice Program for Scenic Artists - St. Louis

The Apprenticeship Program is a three year (3-year) and four thousand (4,000) hour program, available in St. Louis (the Central Region) only, combining work experience in a variety of scenic fields and other responsibilities, as mandated by the Union. (Please NOTE: USA 829 has an Apprenticeship Program FOR SCENIC ARTISTS ONLY. There is NO SIMILAR PROGRAM FOR ANY DESIGNER CATEGORY.)

All applicants must fully meet the following minimum qualifications upon acceptance into the program:

  1. You must be 18 years or older
  2. You must be a High School graduate or have a G.E.D.
  3. There is a $75.00 application fee and a $200 testing fee, your check for $275 should be mailed with application to the address above.
  4. Each qualified applicant will be notified by the committee with their interview/portfolio review time. The interviewers will consider the following attributes:

At the same time there will be a Portfolio Review. Your portfolio should include a minimum of six (6) pieces of your own original work. Non-representational work is not helpful to our judging process.

Upon successful completion of the Interview/Portfolio Review, there will be a Practical Exam of basic artistic skills administered by the committee.

All applications will be received without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disabilities, creed, G.I.N.A., marital status and arrest records. Apprentices will be selected in order of their ranking of the combined scores of Part 1 and Part 2 of the exam.

Once accepted into the program the rate of pay begins at 55% of the journey artist’s rate and increases annually based upon hours on the job and the completion of skill seminars. Seminar classes are mandatory.
